Meckel diverticulum

In fetal life small intestine is in connection with the navel (umbilicus) through a narrow little duct. If this duct somehow remains present after birth we call it Meckel diverticulum.

It may cause intussusception, volvulus (twisting of the intestine) and may become inflamed which results in perforation and it consequently causes peritonitis. Its symptom may be the following: voiding a big amount of fresh red blood through the rectum without pain and mostly without passing stool.

Therapy: surgical intervention.
